Kalleri, a village about eight kilometres from Vadakara on the road towards Thanneerpanthal, is home to one of the best-known Kuttichathan shrines of north Malabar. The temple stands on a small rise beside the road, between Kalleri hill and Aroor hill and not far from the Mahe canal. People of every caste and religion come here – the committee speaks of thousands of visitors every week – and across the district the shrine has a reputation as a place where a sincere prayer is heard quickly.
The deity is Sree Kuttichathan, also addressed as Vishnumaya Sasthappan. In the belief of his devotees he is a son of Shiva and Parvathi, a guardian who does not abandon anyone who calls on him with faith, and one who removes obstacles and shields his people from the ill-will of others. Worship follows the north Malabar way – thottam songs, vellattam, and the Thira of Kuttichathan and Gulikan at the annual festival – rather than the kalam traditions of central Kerala. Once the family temple of the Kurukkat tharavadu, it is now run by a registered people's committee that also funds medical help and social work.
History & Aithihyam
The story of Kuttichathan belongs to the oral tradition of north Malabar, and it is told in more than one version. In the one most often heard around Kalleri, he was born in the fifteenth century to a Namboothiri of the Kalakattu illam at Payyanur and a woman of a lower community. Neglected and mocked as a boy, and refused the place that his father's house gave its other sons, he left home. Other tellings, closer to the theyyam songs, make him a dark, three-eyed child whom Shiva and Parvathi, disguised as a hunter couple, left with a childless Namboothiri – a boy who defied his teacher and whose spirit could not be destroyed even when he was killed.
The Kalleri legend continues at Lokanarkavu. There the young Chathan befriended Malamathan Kunkan, whose family held the right to raise the palm-leaf umbrella at the Lokanarkavu festival. When the temple's powerful men beat Kunkan for a delay, Kuttichathan flung fire into the festival pandal; when the same men hanged his friend from a tree at Kuttoth, he cut him free. He is said to have sung a pooram song at Lokanarkavu, danced on Kottakkad hill and walked on towards Kalleri – and no one saw him again. Devotees believe he never left; the temple marks the spot where he is thought to remain. A variant says that a Namboothiri of the Kattumadam illam bound him there with a promise to return, and never came back.
Historically the shrine was the temple of the Kurukkat tharavadu, and, as the temple itself notes, the poojas have traditionally been performed by Thiyya families of the area. Today the temple is registered as a society and run by an elected people's committee whose general body meets every February. Alongside the rituals the committee funds medical assistance for the needy and cultural programmes, and the temple is widely described as a place that welcomes people of every caste and faith.
